Moana & the Tribe
...have taken their haka-funk-dub-fusion and politically charged music to the Herodus Atticus (Athens), Sydney Opera House (Australia), Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Sziget (Budapest), Le Club (Moscow), Venice Biennale (Italy), Jarasum (Korea), Club Babylon (Istanbul), Rainforest Festival (Borneo), Shanghai World Expo, Heb Celt (Scotland) & many more...
Moana cites meeting and performing for President Nelson Mandela as a highlight
and credits a host of activists and allies for shaping her commitment to social justice.
An Art Laureate , NZ Music Hall of Fame inductee and Distinguished Alumni of Auckland University, she is also an awardwinning documentary maker and journalist.
Her first band Moana & the Moahunters broke new ground with songs
that fused taonga puoro, haka and te reo into contemporary dance music on their two albums TAHI (1993) and RUA (1998). The song 'Moko' (RUA) won the Grand Jury Prize of the International Songwriting Contest. In 2019, Independent Music NZ (IMNZ) named TAHI as
the Taite Music Classic Album.
In 2022, a Tiki Dub remake of their iconic dance anthem 'AEIOU' (TAHI) was launched at
parliament to mark the 1972 Māori Language petition to the NZ Government.
Formed in 2002, the 'genre-bending band' Moana & the Tribe are a fluid collective of talented musos, vocalists and haka performers. Whether it's a rousing 12-piece band for big festival stages OR the acoustic 4-piece for theatre OR the electronic-dub unit (Moana, Paddy Free, Trina Maniapoto and Scotty Morrison), Moana & her Tribe connect with audiences everywhere
through music that moves hearts, minds, feet and always - timely.
Moana & the Tribe have released albums TORU, WHA and RIMA.
In 2024, longtime co-writers and collaborators Moana, Paddy and Scotty
released her 6th studio album ONO.
Entirely in te reo Māori and inspired by traditional incantations,
each song features a female guest vocalist from a nation the band have performed in.
Mari Boine (Norway), Inka Mbing (Taiwan), Shellie Morris (Australia) Jani Lauzon (Canada), Megan Henderson (Scotland) and Kaumakaiwa Kanaka'ole (Hawai'i) share their
powerful vocals with Scotty and Moana over Paddy's dub grooves.
